The Holy Grail (of videogames) Sells For $17,500

Even in these penny pinching times, there are still some passionate gamers out there willing to part with ludicrous sums of money for retro videogames. Take one JJ Hendricks for example, a US collector who recently parted with $17,500 for the ‘Holy Grail’ of video game collectibles; the Nintendo World Championship cart.

The carts were created especially for a Nintendo game competition in 1990 and awarded to winners and semi-finalists in the event. 26 gold carts were manufactured, and contained a 6 minute 21 second triathlon event made up of three NES titles: Rad Racer, Tetris and Super Mario Bros. We work that out to be approx $2818 per minute of gameplay. Geez!

So what’s the most you’ve ever paid for a computer game? I remember forking out £100 for a Japanese copy Street Fighter 2 Turbo on the Super Nintendo, and £70 for the US version of Star Fox. Actually, it amazes me how I managed to get my hands on that kind of money on a schoolboy’s wage.

I swapped Batman Forever for Streets Of Rage 3 on MD. Bargain!

I paid £65 ($117.50) total to get Snatcher from a US eBay seller to get the game in my collection, I haven’t paid more though

I think the most I ever coughed up for a game was £70 for Donkey Kong 64. In the UK you could only buy it packaged with the 4MB Expansion Pack for the N64, hence the high price.

Not exactly Nintendo World Champion territory. And these days Guitar Hero/Rock Band packages go for more. But £70 is pretty substantial for a ten year old platform game.

I paid £89 for a Japanese copy of The adventures of little Ralph on the Playstation (chippoke Ralph no Daibuken). Worth every penny as it’s a great game.
