Steam Sale Ends Today

Friday, January 4th, 2013

It’s the last day of the Steam sale, so get your bargains while you can.

While it’s not been quite as impressive as the summer sale, there’s still been some great deals on offer, and there’s a particular nice batch of classics available today.

Fans of Tomb Raider will be pleased to hear that the first 9 Tomb Raider games are available for £1.74 each, or in a pack for £9.99. The Thief games are also available for the same price, or you can buy all three titles for £4.74.

£1.74 seems to be the perfect price point for many, as both Star Wars Knights Of The Old Republic titles are available for the same price. The above represents hours of gameplay and tremendous value for money.

Other classic retro franchises include the latest Football Manager for £14.99, Civilization V: Game Of The Year Edition for £7.49, and Painkiller: Hell & Damnation for £8.99. Alternatively you can buy the above, alongside the original and its 4 expansions for £15.99.

Finally there’s the THQ Collection. While it’s mainly new franchises, it does represent tremendous value for money. For £19.99 you gain access to 22 full games that range from Saints Row 2 and 3 to Supreme Commander, Titan Quest, Darksiders 1 and II, 3 Red Faction games and the excellent Company Of Heroes. That lot alone should keep you going until the next sale.

The delightful Cave Story will cost you just 174 pennies, while Dungeon Master clone Legend Of Grimrock is just £5.99, making it an essential purchase for anyone into old school RPGs.

Giana Sisters: Twisted Dreams Out Now

Friday, November 9th, 2012

Fans of the Great Giana Sisters should head over to Steam.

Giana Sisters: Twisted Dreams is now available on Valve’s online service and it’s a doozy.

Gorgeous to look at and with a truly stunning soundtrack, the biggest draw of Giana Sisters is the ability of Giana to switch personalities and also switch between too distinct worlds.

Cute Giana is able to glide long distances resides in a creepy nightmare mode, while Punk Giana has a devestating spin dash and lives in a dream world. Switching between both environements is as easy as pressing a button, while the music and visuals of the two worlds twists and changes and is utterly superb.

It suffers from some very unfair difficulty spikes at certain stages of the game, but if you stick with it you’ll find Giana Sisters: Twisted Dreams to be an insane amount of fun. Miss is at your peril.

NiGHTS Is Back!

Wednesday, October 3rd, 2012

Huzzah, Sega’s stunning score attack game, NiGHTS Into Dreams is back!

Currently available on PS3 (it’s available on Live Arcade 05 October) it’s a truly stunning game that has been giving a loving makeover from Sega.

The game itself is effectively a slightly upscaled version of the fantastic PS2 release, which previously only came out in Japan. This means that as well as getting enhanced visuals and a beautifully remixed soundtrack, you’ll also have access to the Sega Saturn original.

You can expect a review in issue 109 of Retro Gamer.

Steam Big Picture Now Available

Tuesday, September 11th, 2012

Valve has made its first major move toward the home console market.

Steam Big Picture is a new beta that has just been released, which gives the digital service a brand new interface, better-suited to gaming on a TV. It features easy to navigate menus, allows instant access to every friend and game you have, and is navigated entirely by a compatible joypad.

Rumours have been building for some time that Valve are hard at work on a Steam console, and this could well be the first of several important steps. You can chat with friends via the joypad, and it’s even possible to play mouse and keyboard games on it as well (although you can still stick with the traditional method if you prefer. Finally there’s a new browser available, which again, is compatible with a joypad for easier navigation.

Steam Big Picture is available for free now. Download the client and take it for a whirl.

Cannon Fodder 3 Out Now

Friday, August 17th, 2012

Cannon Fodder 3 is currently available to buy from Steam.

Created by Burut CT, it appears to be a little more fast-paced and action orientated compared to the original two games. Codemasters have been pursuing a third Cannon Fodder game for many years now, so it’s pleasing to see that we’ve finally got one. Early impressions haven’t been favourable, with repetitive gameplay being the biggest issue. But we’ll be reserving judgement until we’ve had a proper play ourselves. Hopefully this weekend in fact.

The art style does look a little garish, but the videos found on Steam do suggest that there’s going to be quite a lot of action in it. Expect a definitive review in issue 108.

Currently Playing – Alan Wake

Tuesday, August 14th, 2012

I’ve not played Alan Wake before. I wish I had.

Remedy’s game is quite simply superb. It’s a clever survival horror, with a great emphasis on light and dark, and a cheesy TV style movie plot, which is spread across 6 episodes (with an additional two episodes of downloadable content).

First released on the Xbox in 2010, it tells the story of Alan Wake, a popular writer who has been suffering from writer’s block. He heads to the town of Bright Falls with his wife Alice to regain his muse, but while he’s there something happens to his wife and Alan has to fight a mysterious darkness as he tries to save her.

It’s admittedly sounds rather generic, but Remedy has done a great job with the script to make Alan and the people he interacts with feel totally believable. It’s also beautifully paced, with some truly terrifying moments as you battle against the darkness known as The Taken.

While Alan has a number of weapons available to him, The Taken are impervious until you whittle down their shields with your trusty torch. Torches eat up batteries however, so you must juggle both batteries and bullets while evading attacks. It makes for some tenes play, and can become extremely exhilerating when you simply decide to run to the next safe point (typically a lamp post).

The PC version has been out since January and is an excellent little port thanks to improved visuals, the included DLC (which you pay for on Xbox) and a number of little tweaks that Remedy have been doing behind the scenes. Don’t make the same mistake I did, take a look at it as soon as you can. you won’t be disappointed.

Steam Sale Final Day

Monday, July 23rd, 2012

It’s the final day of the Steam sale, so don’t forget to pick up a bargain.

We’ve already mentioned the Mega Drive-laden Sega Pack, id Software’s excellent pack and the Hitman/Tomb Raider/Deus Ex offering from Square Enix, but there are still plenty of good deals to have if you’re after more modern games.

First up we heartily recommend The Walking Dead. It’s an excellent episodic game with amazing narrative and some really brutal game choices that will no dobut come back to haunt you in later episodes. Fans of old school action will want to check out Rockstar’s Max Payne 3, which is a bargain at just £14.99. Be warned though, it has a hefty 30GB install. The Elder Scrolls V: Skrim is another fairly recent game that has hit the sale. Not only does it look amazing, and feature lots of great Steam Works mods, it’s available for just £17.37.

Fall Out 3: Game Of The Year Edition can be purchased for just under four quid, while the Ultimate version of Fallout New Vegas will set you back £7.49. In short there’s something for everyone, but deals are ending fast, so visit now to avoid disappointment.

It also includes Binary Domain and many of the Total War games. It’s price? Just £34.99.
